Sometimes you stumble across something local that makes you wonder—how have I never heard of this before? That was exactly my reaction when I met with Zach, the founder of the Orlando Kubb group. I recently took time to chat with him at the Orlando Kubb Open to learn more about the game, and his story.

Zach started playing Kubb years ago in Michigan, where he’s originally from, and has been hooked ever since. When he moved to Central Florida, he decided to bring the game with him by launching the Orlando Kubb Meetup, where people can come together, learn the game, and have fun outdoors.

For those unfamiliar, Kubb is a game that blends elements of bowling and horseshoes. The goal is simple but addicting—knock down wooden blocks (“kubbs”) by tossing batons. It’s easy enough for beginners to learn but offers plenty of strategy to keep experienced players engaged.

What really caught my attention, though, is that the National Kubb Championship is held in Eau Claire, Wisconsin—a town just 20 minutes from where I grew up. Somehow, I’d never heard of it until now!

If you’re looking to get outside, meet new people, or just try something different, the Orlando Kubb group is a great way to start. They host regular games and welcome all skill levels. You can find their full schedule on Meetup.com and learn more about the group by visiting orlandokubb.com

Whether you’re a seasoned player or completely new to the game, Zach and the group will make you feel right at home. Who knows—you might even find yourself training for Eau Claire next year!
